Investing your Funds Profitably and Responsibly
The Pensions Trust in conjunction with its advisers provides a complete investment service for members of its schemes, which include the Social Housing Pension Scheme (SHPS).
This service includes: setting the investment strategy, appointing investment managers, negotiating fees, setting performance targets, setting risk controls, monitoring investment performance, administration and voting and corporate governance issues.
The Pensions Trust's commitment to securing the best returns on investment is underpinned in a number of ways:
| » |
By using a ‘best of breed’ approach, it selects only the top-performing investment managers for each asset sector.
|
| » |
It invests in a wide range of assets, including direct investment in property.
|
| » |
Investment managers are subject to the constant scrutiny of The Pensions Trust's investment sub-committee.
|
| » |
The Pensions Trust supports social, environmental, ethical and corporate governance developments.
|
| » |
With funds of £1.52billion pounds, The Pensions Trust is a major investment customer, able to negotiate advantageous fees.
|
| » |
Investment risks are constantly monitored. |
For all the Schemes it administers, The Pensions Trust has developed a range of investment strategies, from higher risk approaches, which give greater weighting to equities (company shares), to strategies with a lower associated risk and returns.
The different schemes are then able to adopt the strategy that best suits their particular purposes.

SHPS invests mainly in equities (75%) with the balance invested in bonds and property.
All investment gains go back into the fund for the benefit of members because The Pensions Trust takes no profit and has no shareholders to pay dividends to.
SHPS aims to achieve a long-term percentage return in excess of the increase in national average earnings.
The SHPS Pensions Committee reports on the Scheme's investment performance in the Annual Review issued to members in spring each year. Copies of recent reviews are available in the Document Library.
The SHPS Pensions Committee has set up its own Investment sub-committee to monitor performance and to consider how the Scheme's funds should be invested as The Pensions Trust's investment strategy evolves.
